The Safer Wales Dyn project was created as a Pilot Project in October 2004 as an offshoot of Cardiff Women’s Safety Unit.
Safer Wales was instrumental in the development of the Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy (IDVA) service to provide robust and immediate safety planning to female victims of domestic abuse.
The Safer Wales Dyn was developed to support Heterosexual, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender men to enable access to services which support his needs.
The Project was officially launched in January 2005 managed by Safer Cardiff (Now Safer Wales) and funding for this service was provided from Cardiff Community Safety Partnership.At this time the Dyn Project only offered safety planning and advocacy to men in the Cardiff area.
The service was successful in supporting men in Cardiff and at this time we could see an obvious need to expand our remit. As it was difficult to develop advocacy services in other areas at that time, we needed another solution to providing support.
A pilot project of a helpline was launched in February 2006 as a way of providing basic support and information to men all around Wales. The Pilot ran until December 2006, when it was suspended awaiting further funding. Support came in the form of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government for a Project Coordinator to work across Wales raising awareness of men experiencing domestic abuse. This funding has allowed us to relaunch the helpline and create a website to compliment the information.
